It is inspirational, phenomenal, painfully and beautifully written. All the characters are connected with each other in the most entertaining and interesting way. The story of the novel entertains the readers of all the ages.
Granted, this post-gay approach satisfied a commercial purpose. Straub effectively made Underhill more accessible to the average genre reader, who might blanch at a story that threw them too deeply into the gay experience. Even so, his approach showed tremendous respect for the character of Underhill and, by proxy, the gay community.
This first volume surveys a century and a half of American fantastic storytelling, revealing in its 44 stories an array of recurring themes: trance states, sleepwalking, mesmerism, obsession, possession, madness, exotic curses, evil atmospheres. In the tales of Irving, Poe, and Hawthorne, the bright prospects of the New World face an uneasy reckoning with the forces of darkness. In the ghost-haunted Victorian and Edwardian eras, writers including Henry James, Edith Wharton, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Ambrose Bierce explore ever more refined varieties of spectral invasion and disintegrating selfhood. 153554b96e
