Parody and tribute films are a popular type of Italian cinema production. Many European critics saw Caligula as a parody film par excellence.[citation needed]The most famous Italian non-realistic parody of Caligula is Caligula & Messalina (1982) by Joe D'Amato and Luciano Bartoli. It was inspired by the book Caligula: The Untold Story by Joe D'Amato, who also wrote the script for this film. D'Amato's novel was published in 1973 and was a best-seller in Italy. It was made into a 1975 movie, Caligula, starring Malcolm McDowell. D'Amato's book and the film contained a considerable amount of historical inaccuracies, and D'Amato's book was widely criticized by Italians and historians.[citation needed]The collective members of the cult band the Beatles parodied these popular Italian films in their song Paul Is Dead. The British band's spoof album was called Back in the USSR. Other parody films include: Nero: The Untold Story (1993) by Francesca Manfesta (who also wrote the script), which parodied Caligula;Caligula: The Untold Story, (1984) by Francesca Manfesta and Luciano Bartoli (author of Caligula and Messalina), which parodied Caligula & Messalina; Alcibiade (1996) by Francesca Manfesta and Luciano Bartoli, which parodied Messalina;Messalina: The Untold Story (1997) by Francesca Manfesta, which parodied both Caligula & Messalina and The Other Caligula; and The Other Messalina (2009) by Andrea Pagnani. Other parody films include: Caligula: La Storia Mai Contata 827ec27edc
