A research team from McGill University's computer science school has published a paper that demonstrates a way of creating fake "Likes" on Facebook without using a botnet or an army of spammers. The team says, in a paper published on March 19 this year, that Facebook was alerted to the flaws two years ago but loopholes on the site still remain.
The McGill paper will be of interest to Facebook spammers who, until now, have employed armies of low-paid workers in developing countries to create fake Facebook profiles. Questionable advertisers use these click farms to make themselves appear more popular than they actually are. Those click farms also pollute the fanbases of legitimate advertisers because the fake profiles add Likes to real brands in order to resemble real users. Advertisers who have paid to reach more people who might like their pages hate it, too.
Facebook has also been repeatedly sued by advertisers that claim their pages have seen too much click fraud. (There's a proposed class action case pending in a California federal appeals court, for instance). While click fraud is NOT the same thing as fake Likes, plaintiffs' lawyers are clearly interested in any information that might indicate that Facebook generates the appearance of something being clicked on when, in fact, it has not.

Working with a computer scientist at Facebook and one in Lahore, Pakistan, the team found more than 50 sites offering free, fake "likes" for users' posts in exchange for access to their accounts, which were used to falsely "like" other sites in turn.
Facebook said it had addressed the activity described in the research and was no longer seeing it on its platform. It is also investigating different techniques that could be used to generate inauthentic "likes" in smaller volumes and said it will take the appropriate action to help ensure that connections and activity on its service are authentic.
Their business model is basic: They make their money by posting ads on their sites and also selling "premium" services that allow users to get even more "likes" than they allow their regular users. Some also allow users to create fake comments that can be added to the post of their choice.
The sites operate openly, and researchers found them by entering a Google search for phrases such as "Page Liker." Among the 50 so-called collusion networks listed researchers listed was djliker.com, which described itself as "a social marketing system that will increase likes, comments and increase visits to pages."
The networks identified by these researchers do not appear to be linked to another, extensive Facebook scam involving fraudulent "likes" that Facebook said it had disrupted in April. That operation targeted popular publishers' pages with false "likes" in an attempt to gain more Facebook friends. Facebook purged millions of fake accounts connected to that scam from USA TODAY, one of the primary targets, and others.
The potential audience Facebook offers is massive. Even if the number of total users shrunk for the first time in early 2022, getting Facebook likes still promotes your content to some 2.11 billion accounts.
Social monitoring is when you use data related to your brand from social media to gain business insights. Platforms like Hootsuite offer powerful tools to analyze the data your social media presence generates. When you fill up your Facebook presence with noise like fake likes, you make it harder to find out what real people want.
Increasing engagement means getting more likes from the people who see them. When you make content that your audience wants to see, you get likes more efficiently than if you hit Post on the first thing that comes into your head.
To make content that your audience will engage with, you have to spend some time finding out what they like. Making decisions based on data from your specific context will help you make posts that get more likes.

Did you know that the most followed person on Facebook is Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo? You would think that an international popstar would top the list, but Ronaldo beats them with a staggering 122 million followers. Imagine how many likes his posts can get! Granted there are over 2 billion active users on the social media platform, it's only natural that brands and celebs use it for PR and advertising. Apart from Instagram and YouTube, Facebook also plays a huge role in growing your market. The website has over 2 million active advertisers at the moment. Every minute, 486,183 users are logged in on mobile app alone. That's why businesses and personalities go above and beyond just to get likes on Facebook. In fact, companies often gauge their public presence through engagements on the social media site. This includes likes, comments, and shares.
The map in this article was amended on 12 April 2021 to clarify the nature of fake accounts in Bolivia. The article was amended on 15 April to incorporate information from the YAP provided after publication.
What I have found to work best with facebook, is to tag my clients when I post their pictures (Obviously with their permission). This is simple facebook practice, but it reaches the clients sphere of influence. Every person has a different sphere of influence, and the more clients you reach, the more broad your reach of advertisement. I believe a happy client is the best marketing you could ever pay for, so I invest in them. I do not pay for advertisement at all, since I truly believe that photos and the clients themselves sell your product. I have found that happy clients (not just with the photos but with the entire experience) end up promoting your business and getting your photos in front of others more than most advertisements can. THere are ways to beat the facebook machine if these claims are true. Use what they do allow and what their entire social premise is built on (staying connected). Just some thoughts.
This is a great video i think the most of us knew that, but nice facts good explained. For everybody who wants to check where the fans come from, check out this little tool. Its from a very famous german magazine and you can see where the likes from your or any other facebook page comes from:
I run a small specialized cycling house in Belgium. We have a pretty small demographic, but very passionate and engaged in all our posts back in the day before the big algorithm change. I would go to popular bike races, take photos of the race, tag people in the posts, get huge amounts of engagement, but then after about 7 races into the season I uploaded a fresh group of photos and my viewership went to less than %25 of our pages likes (before we would have 300% or more). Over the last year we have seen a steady increase in likes, but still flat engagement. We have even paid to promote our page a few times as an experiment, but just as this article, we saw likes from places and people who have no reason to like our page. Until this changes we have moved onto other more lucrative social media. One day, just like my hotmail account, AOL Instant Messenger, MSN messenger, ICQ account; Facebook will be relegated to the world of MySpace. 2b1af7f3a8
